Luang Prabang

A charming French-colonial town with more tourists than locals. We preferred it to Chiang Mai. Tons of shopping opportunities and amazing food - the best of Thai and Vietnamese combined; and very inexpensive. Stay for 2-3 days at least.

Restaurants:

  • Bouang (casual) -

    • Highly recommend! In the center of old town, this restaurant is incredibly charming and makes delicious food. It is small and gets packed, so go early or make a reservation. More

  • Manda de Laos (upscale) -

    • Highly recommend! Wonderful ambiance and excellent food + cocktails. Make a reservation, and don't miss this one. More

  • Tamarind (casual) -

    • A good lunch spot with views of the river. An excellent introduction to Laotian food. More

Activities:

  • Kuang Si Falls

    • Stunning waterfalls about an hour from Luang Prabang. Unique teal color water. Optional hike around the waterfall. The walk from the carpark to the falls is about 10 minutes, and uneven but not strenuous.

  • Chomphet

    • Across the river from Luang Prabang is a little village called Chompet. It houses a few different temples that you can walk to in a row following a path (once you find the path). To get there, you can take a car ferry for about $0.50 and then walk (use your map and a bit of luck). Along the path is a temple inside a cave and getting to see this is 100% worth the effort.

  • Mount Phousi -

    • Located in the center of town, this is about a 1 hour activity. Walk up about 100 stairs to the top and enjoy the 360-degree views of the town. Purchase a bird on your way up and set it free at the top - it's good luck!

  • Night Market -

    • Located in the center of town in the evenings.

  • Ock Pop Tok -

    • If you are interested in weaving, this is the place to go.

Skip:

  • L'Elephant (casual) -

    • Good for French food, but fewer Laotian options.

  • La Belle Epoque (upscale) -

    • The food and service here are quite good, but indoor seating is hard to come by and there are lots of bugs out at night.

Insider Tips

Pro Tips - Hire a driver and go see the waterfalls! Taking the vehicle-ferry across the river is easy and extremely cheap (like $0.50). Bring 2 passport photos PRINTED with you and US cash (bring more than they tell you online because there is an additional processing fee on site) - you will need these for a visa.

LGBT - Felt fine (didn't make us change to double beds), but no PDA

Bathrooms - Hard to find outside hotels and restaurants.

ATMs - Some work and some don't, get cash at the airport

Water - Tap water is not potable

Tipping - 10% at your discretion
