Prague

Cobble-stone streets, exquisite facades, majestic bridges, music, and open-air cafes define Prague. Spend at least a weekend here.

Restaurants:

  • Field (fine dining, Michelin star) -

    • In Short: Exquisite food; make a reservation

    • At Length: If you are only in Prague for one day, make it a point to eat in this restaurant. It is phenomenal. We tried this and La Degustation, and there is really no comparison. Field is much more creative - in dish construction and presentation. You really feel like you're eating at a Michelin restaurant. Delicious food, outstanding service, creative cuisine. The atmosphere is upscale but casual, which offers a nice change of pace. They have an a la carte menu in addition to a tasting menu, so you don't have to gorge yourself - but after you try one dish, you will want them all.

  • Novy Svet (casual) -

    • In Short: Quintessential cafe

    • At Length: Go off the beaten track and get lost trying to find this darling little cafe tucked away down a picturesque lane. The coffee and desserts here are delicious and the ambiance is almost too precious. 100% worth the detour.

  • Vinarna Bokovka (casual) -

    • In Short: Hole-in-the-wall winery
    • At Length: If you want to have an intimate glass of wine and maybe some cheese, this is the place to go. The ambiance is warm and inviting but also very private. Perfect beginning for a date night. Hidden gem.
  • U Kunstatu (casual) -
    • In Short: Hidden gem for beer
    • At Length: Located in the old city, this beer place is tucked away off the beaten track - so it's crowded but you have to know to look for it. They have beer and wine tasting, plus you can try different Czech liquors. The cheese and charcuterie selection is decent too. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. You can stay and play games - a great place to spend a few hours. Also, it sits on top of an underground palace that is well-preserved and you can go visit.
  • Muj Salek Kavy (casual) -

    • In Short: Hip cafe with tasty drinks and desserts

    • At Length: This cafe is worth going out of your way to try. It has a warm and inviting vibe that makes you want to stretch out with a coffee or tea, and a good book and stay a while; or, have a refreshing drink and a lively chat with friends. It's how all "cafes" should be. The food and drinks are tasty and the pastries looked really yummy. The waitstaff is very nice, and fluent in English (as are most, but they were particularly friendly here).

  • La Degustation Boheme Bourgeoise (SKIP; fine dining, Michelin star)

    • In Short: Trying to be fancy

    • At Length: Go to Field instead. The dishes weren't consistent here. They looked beautiful, but didn't taste as good as we hoped they would. The ambiance is fine and service is great, but the food is lackluster.

Activities:

  • Prague Metronome -

    • Located on Letna Hill, the Metronome offers some of the best views of the Charles Bridge and city beyond. It's also located in a beautiful park

  • Vysehrad Castle

    • A historical fort with beautiful views of the river and city. Far less crowded than Prague Castle

  • Sunday Farmer's Market at Jiriho z Podebrad Park (and metro stop) -

    • An unexpected treat. This is an idyllic European farmer's market with fruit, cheese, sausage, cakes, and more. Come for lunch and hang out in the park all afternoon.

  • Old Jewish Quarter -

    • Located in the old city, this area is home to a number of synagogues and a cemetery. One ticket will take you through all the sites.

  • Funicular to Petrin Hill

    • The funicular is worthwhile for a few reasons. First, it starts in Mala Strana, an old neighborhood with beautiful architecture (go to Cafe Savoy for breakfast and then wander through the neighborhood to the funicular). Second, it drops you off in a park with beautiful old trees and views, easy to get lost wandering. Third, you can walk from here over to the Strahov Monastic Brewery - enjoy the cathedral, grounds (including a rose garden), and beer.

  • Franz Kafka Museum -

    • We didn't go to the museum itself, but the neighborhood around the museum is worth strolling through. There's also a restaurant on the river here and a titilating sculpture.

All of these are worth glimpsing, but don't plan on spending much time here because they will likely be overrun with tourists.
